Ian Tan became a financial consultant during his second year of studies at NUS Business School. He discovered his passion for financial planning while helping his own parents prepare for retirement and noticed that many people lack important knowledge to ensure that they are retirement ready.
Since then, he has helped over 200 individuals and families in their portfolios closing the gap between their current financial situation and their desired goals. Using an asset planning framework, Ian helps people of all ages achieve financial freedom earlier than expected, typically by 5-10 years, through his professional allocation process.
Through his time planning for his clients, he realised that many do not possess the necessary knowledge to properly invest. Thus, he decided to write a book (The Independent Investor) that aims to provide a step-by-step guide on how to invest in a responsible manner, starting from the basics of financial planning and investment strategies, to understanding market trends and analysing risks. In his book, he emphasises the importance of staying true to one’s investment goals while creating a diversified portfolio, making informed investment decisions, identifying potential opportunities, and maximising returns in a responsible and ethical manner.
